Issue 47: MMORPGPublished November 2023
In a weak machine inside a Filipino computer cafe, the last day of a dying MMORPG plays out. Discontinuities between the self, avatar, and game worlds bring us to search for boundaries that might not exist: the avatar and self are constantly fragmented, split apart, reconstructed in endless loops. Freezing, disconnections, jarring disturbances, a world of extremes. Across different scales of time, space, and body, we might only be left to wonder: when does the game end?

Chia Amisola is an internet & ambient artist. Their ‘internet ambient’ is situated in ecology, opacity, visibility, infrastructure, & territory—continuously exploring the internet’s love, labor, and liberation. Amidst a postcolonial internet of extremes, their (web)site-specific art posits self-preservation as communal preservation, creation as synonymous with liberation, and identity as a source of infrastructure-building.
They received a BA in Computing & the Arts from Yale University in 2022. Their work can be found at https://chia.design and instagram.com/hotemogf.
