I recently saw the film 'Hiroshima Mon Amour'. 「

between a local business man and a traumatised French actor.

心に傷を負ったフランス人女優との出来事
the tone of the film is melancholy.
憂鬱な色合いの映画、
The main characters are committed to their ennui.
エンヌイな二人
I had heard about the film years ago,
随分昔し、この映画のことを誰かから聞いたが
and wasn't particularly interested.
興味はなかった
When I finally watched it,
何年も経ってようやくその映画を観て
I felt a strange resonance.
そこに不思議な「重なり」を感じた
My grandparents met in the immediate aftermath of the bomb.
わたしの祖父と祖母は原爆投下から間もない頃、広島で出会った
She was a local.
祖母は広島の人だった
He was part of the occupation force.
祖父は進駐軍の軍人だった
They left Hiroshima for Australia five years later,
二人は5年後に広島を離れ、オーストラリアへと渡った
where they were granted a special license
その当時まだ存在していた「白豪主義」の中、
exempting them from the White Australia policy.
特別に許されての事だった。
It was ironic that he died of a bomb related illness,

My mother, aunt and uncle grew up in army camps.

It was probably a strange environment
おそらくそれは彼らが

perhaps even more so as a half Japanese person.

The Enola Gay is a Boeing B-29 Superfortress bomber.

It was used to drop a nuclear bomb on Hiroshima.

The pilot was a man named Colonel Paul Tibbets.
機長操縦士ポールティベッツという名の大佐は
Only days before the final mission

he decided to rename the plane after his mother, Enola Gay Tibbets.

Tibbetts felt the same way about his own mother

Tom Smith is a Melbourne-based artist, musician and researcher whose practice combines performance, video, electronic music, curatorial projects and critical writing. Tom’s work is concerned with the politics of creative economies, generic digital aesthetics, ambivalent affect and music as mode of critical inquiry. Tom’s work explores the tyranny and poetics of computational systems and other technology through eerie video assemblages and live re-performances of digital labour and software-based modes of production.
As a DJ and music producer Tom performs as T.Morimoto, Poison (w. DJ Plead), and Utility (w. Austin Buckett), creating club tracks, experimental/ambient music, and numerous sound design/commissions. His music has been released on labels such as Super Utu, Room 40, SUMAC, Illuminated Paths, Body Promise and Junk Mnemonic, and he is one third of the rapidly expanding SUMAC record label.
Tom has recently completed a PhD through UNSW Art & Design, and currently teaches in the School of Design, Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology.
