Issue 38: Spectacle
gaining ground is a video of addition, building spectacle on spectacle; highlighting a divergence between the natural and digital worlds.
James Wylie is an artist based in Tāmaki Makaurau, Aotearoa, New Zealand and completed his MFA at The Elam School of Fine Arts, The University of Auckland in 2018. Wylie’s work addresses issues of technological, social and political progress. His videos talk to a sensation of overload within the digital and a distraction from the real. Wylie is currently working on a project in Itoshima, Japan, researching Satoyama farming techniques. Wylie was a co-founder of the artist-run space, Snake Pit. Recent exhibitions include: Offline Browser: The Taiwan International Video Art Exhibition, Taipei, Taiwan, 2018; National Contemporary Art Award, Waikato Museum Te Whare Taonga o Waikato, Hamilton; and fine moon, poor tuning, Meanwhile Gallery, Wellington, 2018.
