Talia Smith is an artist and independent curator from New Zealand now based in Sydney, Australia. She is of Cook Island, Samoan and NZ European heritage. Her practices examine themes of time, memory, dislocation and the diaspora with a particular focus on the Asia Pacific and photography. She aims to work collaboratively to provide platforms for diverse voices and experiences. She has curated shows around Australia and New Zealand including Artbank, Cement Fondu, Artspace Sydney, The Lock-Up Newcastle, Centre for Contemporary Photography and Papakura Art Gallery. She was Artbank's emerging curator for 2018, Firstdraft's emerging curator for 2017 and in 2019 was awarded a 12-month mentorship with the director of the Singapore Photo Festival. Her writing has appeared in publications such as Art Almanac, Running Dog and Art New Zealand. She was the chair of Runway from 2016-17 and is currently completing her Master of Fine Arts at UNSW in Sydney.
