Matilda Sutherland
Matilda Sutherland is an artist based in Melbourne, Australia. Through undertaking a Bachelor of Digital Media Design at RMIT University, Matilda has developed her skills as a creative coder, with a focus on feminist technologies, and the re-wilding of the WWW. Matilda has been DJing and producing music under the MTLDA moniker since 2017 - transporting a mix of techno and EBM tinged psychedelia across events in Victoria and beyond. In 2021 Matilda began performing original punk rock and country music under her birth name. Backed by a four-piece band the group released their debut EP, Holy Water in March 2022. Girl On Road is Matilda’s digital label, which showcases underground and experimental club music. It also acts as a vehicle for digital media projects exploring the ethics of being online. In 2021 Matilda wrote and performed the Cowgirl Manifesto as a live coding performance at the Hybrid Live Coding Interfaces conference (online via Montreal). This was the first public offering of the Cowgirl. Through all disciplines Matilda brings poetry, whether it be creating evocative digital spaces and audio, or personal outpourings with the band - there is a common autobiographical thread exploring what it is to be alive both on and off the screen.
Concrete Cowgirl is an interactive digital concrete poem set in a neoCowgirl universe, where The Cowgirl Manifesto resides. In this chapter the Cowgirl must traverse the Urban Jungle, lose herself in No Mxns Land and, ultimately, take on the Big Daddy Data Wranglers.
