This was the final conversation of the residency, which took place between fellow residency artist, Sarah Rodigari and myself. We set ourselves the task of talking for one hour, asking each other questions about our individual practices and creative processes. We talked about the role of public residences for both the organization and the artist, and how, as artists, we navigate these contexts and draw these experiences into the making of our work.
I want people to understand these diagrams as a performative trace of the residency. They are a public display of my process – errant thoughts, chalked up, exposed. They are a confused web of words uttered by Marina Abramovic, Mike Parr, Emma Pike, Sarah Rodigari, Lynsey Peisinger and Anja Kanngieser. At first, I started to draw these diagrams up as a quick response to the residency and to create something for the public to ‘see’. However, I now consider them to hold great significance for me, as I can see that it is at the point where these words bleed in to one another and where their original intentions are layered by their chalked parallels, that my own position as an artist is articulated.
