Marise Williams is an independent scholar, freelance writer and editor whose work has been published in Southerly, Australian Feminist Studies, Studies in Australasian Cinema, M/C: A Journal of Media and Culture, and the essay collection Literature and Politics. She has a PhD in literary theory and visual culture studies from the University of Sydney and has worked as a lecturer at Western Sydney University and the University of Sydney. Her essays have appeared in art exhibition catalogues and she is currently developing an online archival project that documents the visual and psychogeographical effects of housing development in the suburb where she lives in Melbourne. As an in memoriam postscript to “Mourning Half Begun,” Mitzy, whose real name was Ella, passed away in November 2012. She was cremated, not stuffed.
