Drew Bickford lives and works in Sydney. Born 1974 at Penrith, NSW. Drew studied Fine Arts at the University of Western Sydney from 2000-02. He primarily works with drawing to explore his ongoing obsessions with crime, deformity and horror and has participated in a many exhibitions throughout the country. Completing residencies art Artspace and Fraser Studios, he has worked towards significant solo exhibitions and is currently represented by Flinders Street Gallery in Surry Hills, Sydney.
Drew’s practice walks a deliberately fine line between horror and beauty, exploring our prurient desire to be simultaneously repelled and enchanted by the grotesque. His fine black and white ink and graphite drawings recall baroque adult nightmares, rendered in a level of detail that is as insistent and imperious as the content itself.
While working full time as a secondary school art teacher for over ten years, Drew has maintained a consistent art practice, with Art Collector magazine identified him as one of Sydney’s most collectible contemporary surrealists. Drew’s work is in many private collections around the country, as well institutions such as as Artbank and Penrith Regional Gallery. He sat on the Board of MOP Projects in Sydney for several years and has been a feature artist in Sneaky and Empty magazines.
Drew works primarily from his home studio in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, drawing inspiration from explorations of literature, popular culture, the criminal underworld and anything that goes bump in the night.
