Dr Daniel Mudie Cunningham is a Melbourne-born curator, artist and writer based in Sydney. On Instagram he calls himself a ‘picture and performance maker with curator blood’. In 2011 Daniel commenced at Artbank as the Senior Curator, moving into his current role as Assistant Director and Head Curator at the end of 2014. At Artbank he is also the Editor of Sturgeon. Previously he has held positions at Hazelhurst Regional Gallery and University of Western Sydney. Whether curating or making, his interests unify along the lines of an abiding interest in remixing the image streams of art history, queer politics, pop culture, performance and music. That’s probably why he wrote a cultural studies PhD about white trash culture (UWS 2004). He has curated exhibitions at Artbank, Museum of Old and New Art, Gertrude Contemporary, Alaska Projects, Hazelhurst Regional Gallery, Blacktown Arts Centre, Performance Space, Plimsoll Gallery, Firstdraft Gallery and MOP Projects. His art practice has been widely exhibited and is held in the collections of Museum of Old and New Art, Macquarie University, Campbelltown Arts Centre and DLUX Media Arts. As an arts writer he has been promiscuous, but runway magazine (especially issue 13 which he guest edited) was his first love.
