What does the word ‘west’ imply in a contemporaryAustralian context? The concept of ‘west’ shifts dramatically in different contexts: as a marker of place, culture, value and politics it can be an incredibly loaded term. For this issue of Runway we are seeking content that explores the idea of west from multiple perspectives: geographically, as a demographic marker and as a cultural construct. We encourage contributors from the west coast of Australia to the western suburbs of all states and towns, as well as artists and writers exploring ideas of privilege and disadvantage, success and failure, centre and periphery, the significance of place, and the legacy of Western colonisation.

Runway is a format for experimental, emerging and engaged artists, writers, critics and thinkers from all over Australia, and for Australian artists in an international context. We welcome all submissions for written and visual content that engage with the theme of this issue, and particularly encourage experimental approaches that engage with the online format of the magazine.

Runway includes approximately four short form (1000 word) written pieces, four long form (2000 word) written pieces and 4-6 artist/visual based content. That said, written works can feature images and/or video, and visual works can include supporting or explanatory text.

If this is your first time proposing content for Runway, here’s a few handy notes:
– When we say ‘experimental’ we pretty much just mean we are interested in anything from an essay to a letter, to a website or a gif. Don’t be scared. Or if you are, please ask us questions!
– All proposals for content must include a 200 word explanation – tell us about your project, artwork, proposed essay, letter, conversation, gif etc…
– All works should be previously unpublished and un-exhibited at the time of publication
– All submissions should clearly address the theme of WEST as outline above, and be focused on Australian artists, art cultures, art institutions, curatorial ideas and/or artworks.
– Please send all proposals through to editorial[at]runway.org.au.

Timing:
– Content proposals due 20 May
– Successful applicants advised end May
– Content due 20 June
– Issue launched mid-July

Fees:
– Contributions in the ‘artwork’ category will be paid AUD$350
– Short form written contributions (approx 1000 words) $200
– Long form written contributions (approx 2000 words) $350

Extra requirements for custom web proposals:
The Runway publication is a WordPress environment. A combination of images, video, audio, animated gifs, animations (flash or edge animate) and hosted web fonts (with licenses) could be used to create rich media, including full screen background video/images, interactive buttons/animations, rollovers/hover states, transitions and animations.

WordPress runs off the following languages: HTML, JAVASCRIPT, JQUERY, CSS and PHP. Any custom web contributions should be fully responsive and submissions should include a mock-up of the content and a statement about how the contribution will be achieved (ie. let us know about who will build it – e.g. the artist or an outside developer).

Please send all proposals through to editorial[at]runway.org.au.
