CALLOUT FOR RUNWAY ISSUE #30 [ECOLOGIES]

**Proposals are due: 5pm AEST, Wednesday 23rd December 2015
**

Jesse Dyer

For our 30th issue Runway is getting expansive and seeking to explore the world around us. The issue, themed ECOLOGIES, will be produced in collaboration with the SafARI co-curators Louise Dibben and Sophie Kitson. Launching in March 2016, Runway will be the official online venue for SafARI, the artist-run fringe event to the Biennale of Sydney.

This issue will consider the ecologies of the artist-run environment, both on and offline, and reflect the multiplicity of ways artists work in these spaces now. The issue will also provide a critical framework for SafARI, and reflect on the evolutions, fragility and dynamism of our own cultural ecology. We are interested in submissions that explore networks, lifecycles, relationships, power structures, communities and what happens when these environments are disrupted or undermined. We are especially interested in submissions that explore the possibilities of Runway’s online platform.

Runway is seeking submissions from writers and artists interested in exploring the concept of ecologies. Please submit 200 word proposals for written work that is short (up to 1000 words) or long form (up to 2000 words) or experimental (picture essays, video interviews, audio commentaries).

We are also calling for artist submissions of projects either recently completed or in development that would be suited to a digital experience (up to 10 minutes video or sound, or 12 images). Written works can feature images and/or video, and visual works can also include supporting or explanatory text. All works should be previously unpublished.

Extra requirements for those submitting custom web proposals:

The Runway publication is a WordPress environment. A combination of images, video, audio, animated gifs, animations (flash or edge animate) and hosted web fonts (with licenses) could be used to create rich media, including full screen background video/images, interactive buttons/animations, rollovers/hover states, transitions and animations.

WordPress runs off the following languages: HTML, JAVASCRIPT, JQUERY, CSS and PHP. Any custom web contributions should be fully responsive and submissions should include a mock-up of the content and a statement about how the contribution will be achieved (ie. let us know about who will build it – e.g. the artist or an outside developer).

All submissions should clearly address the theme of ECOLOGIES and be focused on Australian artists, art cultures, art institutions, curatorial ideas and/or artworks. Depending on length of submission, writers will be paid between AUD$200 – $350 for a submission. Be aware, your work may be edited, but this is a collaborative process between the Editor and you. Artists will be paid AUD$350 to publish original submissions of new work or works in progress.

Runway Travel Bursaries

Runway has developed a program of small monetary incentives for the reporting of events involving Australian artists in remote, regional or international locations. These can be applied for on an ad-hoc basis by artists and writers who wish to create content for the forthcoming issues, but for whom the cost of travel or entry to an event or show that would otherwise be prohibitive. This initiative is designed to improve the flow of information and critical dialogue between urban, regional and international audiences. Applications for bursaries require a travel proposal, including itinerary and budget, as well as rationale for funding to be submitted along with your issue content submission. For further information, please email the Runway Board runway@runway.org.au.
