We are now open for applications from artists and writers for Runway #38 SPECTACLE.

Aotearoa based artist and writer Natasha Matila-Smith will be guest editing the issue

Spectacle, namably the spectacle of consumption in our society, occurs across capitalism, media, politics, brands, lifestyle, luxury aesthetics, and the exploitation of people and our planet. Are we victims of these value systems, or are we, willing or otherwise, complicit in our consciousness? If we are presumably self-aware then how does one begin to break down corrupt systems when they are so inextricably linked with how we live and function?

Potential areas of engagement include (but are by no means limited to):

  • Visceral and subliminally impactful works that address how spectacle operates in a multi-layered way. Be it aural, visual, psychological or otherwise.
  • A look into practices that critique introspectively, looking at what is implied rather than explicitly stated.
  • An evaluation of online identities.
  • The predicaments of social constructs and representation.

We are looking for:

  • Written essays of between 1500 – 2500 words, including and encouraging experimental as well as more traditional writing.
  • Artworks of any discipline (which can be easily translated to an online format).
  • All works included will be newly commissioned works for this issue.
  • Please read previous issues of Runway prior to submitting a proposal.

Guidelines

For written work please submit:

  • 200 word pitch responding to the theme of Spectacle
  • 500 word sample of your work
  • CV

For artworks please send:

  • 150 words about the work your will create
  • 3-5 mins of video/sound or 5 images of your previous work
