If this film were to be re-cast from its original immigrant Chinese family living in Vancouver to an immigrant Filipino family living in Brisbane, Australia, my mother would play Sandra Oh’s character of Ava, Maria’s daughter. A fiery and determined supporting character, Ava is a conduit between differing value systems, first generation immigrant Chinese and left-leanings of the west. It’s a non-hierarchal soup of orienting a moral compass that is the modern day experience of the assimilated.
